# Create

Select an Artboard, Group, or Layer to create a new Symbol, select a Shape or Text Layer to create a new Shared Style.&#x20;

By default, you create a Symbol with the Layer name pre-filled as a placeholder. To switch to creating a Shared Style, hit `command option →`. To switch back to creating a Symbol, hit `command option ←`.

### Create Symbol

When you have selected Artboard or Group, it's not possible to create a Shared Text or Layer Style out of it. Runner then disables this option.

# Shortcuts

Runner is easier with the right shortcuts set up. Learn how to set it up and start working faster.

## Default Hotkey

We have chosen to **not** set up a Shortcut by default to launch Runner Pro. Conflicting shortcuts in Sketch are a pain to manage, and shortcuts generally only work well for specific keyboard layouts. Set up a hotkey that works well for your situation on first use.&#x20;

![](/files/-LZUJzd85qNb8ptUtp-n)

## How to Set Up or Change Shortcuts

Go to **Plugins › Runner Pro › Settings** in the menu bar and select the Shortcuts tab. Here you can set your favorite Shortcut for all Runner [commands](/getting-started), for `Run Last Action`, Toggling the visibility of [RunBar](/runbar), and navigating forward and backward between Artboards.

Check out the [Sketch Documentation](https://www.sketch.com/docs/shortcuts/) to see if your intended Shortcut isn't clashing with one that's already defined.

![](/files/-LYvDNE-ZgnPeBVY3W4x)

## Run Last Action&#x20;

If you frequently Run the same action one after another, you can set a shortcut to execute it rightaway and bypass launching the Runner search window.

# Components Browser (Beta)

A powerful window to manage and use your design components

![The Components Browser: Search for any component and add it to the canvas](/files/-M8tH4C1AzQ47priKJ7p)

## Search and filtering sections

Search for all components at the same time or use the groups in the sidebar to filter on a specific set of components. You can also filter to only search within a selected Library.

## Inserting components to the canvas&#x20;

Drag and drop to add components to the canvas. You can also hit return and the selected componets are attached to your mouse cursor to then drop them anywhere ont the canvas.

### Replace layers and apply styles

When you have a layer selected on the canvas, you can replace it with a selected Symbol by hitting `option + return`. When you have one or multiple text or shape layers selected, you can apply a style by using the same shortcut.

## Batch rename components

You can drag components onto a group in the sidebar to rename and reorganize them. You can also rename a group in the sidebar to batch rename all of the containing components.

![Components Browser: Keep window open setting](/files/-M9Ho3J1CJTN9nKkKC1a)

{% hint style="info" %}
With the **`Keep window open`** setting turned off, dragging components will automatically hide the window. Hold **`Shift`** before you start dragging to keep the window open. You can then drop them on a group in the sidebar to rename them.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
Renaming and reorganizing components only works for your open document. To edit components in a Library, open the Library first.
{% endhint %}

## Navigate the tabs: Symbols, Layer Styles, Text Styles

You can hit the `tab` or `shift + tab` keys to cycle through the three tabs.

## Zoom the thumbnails

The slider in the top left allws you to adjust the number of columns for the previews. Depending on the side of the window it can fit more or less columns in it.&#x20;

Hit `command -` or `command +` to zoom out and in.

![Zoom with the slider or with a keyboard shortcut](/files/-M8tIdvygOEsjgAyAa5q)

## Set up a shortcut

Using the Components Browser efficiently works best by opening it with a [shortcut](/shortcuts#how-to-set-up-or-change-shortcuts). You can do this in Runner Settings.

## Settings

![Components Browser settings](/files/-M9Hom1PdDXlRTtk0c03)

### Keep window open

By default, the Browser window closes when you drag any component out, just like Runner Search. You can set it to keep the window open at all times via settings

### Thumbnail backgrounds

The background color of the thumbnails matches the system theme by default. You can also force it to always use either light, dark, or transparent backgrounds.

### Refresh the results

When you design with multiple documents open, the browser can sometimes manage itself to get out of sync. Use the Refresh button in the toolbar to fix this.

## Recommended setups

There are many ways you can use the Browser. Here is some inspiration on what could work for your situation.

![Setup: Open the browser window whenever you need and keep the context of your document.](/files/-M8uFu69yBlPLGRTIWX7)

![Setup: Keep the browser window open on a secondary display](/files/-M8tFHDpdLEtLa1huisF)

![Setup: Open the window in full screen to maximize the number of search results.](/files/-M8uG-d-uFMr_UusG-uc)

# RunBar

RunBar is a powerful new toolbar that lives above the Sketch Canvas. It can be completely customized to your preferences. Go to Settings to adjust its setup.

## Tutorial: RunBar Essentials

{% embed url="<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vgvj5vAHhvA>" %}

### RunBar consists of 4 sections:

* Quick Access Menu
* History Navigator
* JumpBar
* Actions Bar

You can toggle each of the sections on or off in Runner Settings.

![](/files/-LdnNkaljYhh3MPEdtG_)

## Quick Access Menu

This utility menu allows you to browse recently visited Artboards, Collapse All Groups in the Sketch Layer List, show and hide the Layer List and Toolbar, hide RunBar, open Runner Settings and access the Runner Help documentation.

![](/files/-LdnNu4NoFpMOGlkWhPF)

## History Navigator

Navigate forward and backward between recently visited Artboards using the left and right arrow icons positioned on the left side in RunBar.

## JumpBar

The JumpBar is like a bread crumb path, and allows you to jump to any other Layer in your Document. With a Layer selected, it shows the full path from Page, through Artboard and Groups all the way to the selected Shape, Text, Bitmap, Slice, etc. Click on any section to start navigating the Layer tree from there.

![](/files/-LdnNxT7uwYk4qtjed8q)

## Actions Bar

The Actions Bar has similar functionality as the Sketch Toolbar. You can customize it by adding any action to the bar. Unlike the native Toolbar, you can also add plugin actions to RunBar.&#x20;

To reorder actions, hold `command` and drag items around. Drag an icon outside the Actions Bar to delete it.

![](/files/-LYvj9e1wFzHzqAKlyqs)

### Custom Icons for Plugins

You can add a custom icon for any plugin action. Drag and drop a `.png` on the icon to apply it. Dragging out the Preview of a Layer, or from the Layer List also works.

![](/files/-LhZMUXTM_fkdZ20_LYQ)

# Settings

Customize Runner to your needs in Settings.

## General Settings

![](/files/-LdnNNeOUZIQOsIMMTHh)

## Always Start with a Specific Command

Change this setting if you want to launch Runner with a specific command, or with the `Last used` command. This means Runner remembers the last command you were using and starts with that next time you launch it.

![](/files/-LdnNRjeaf9QTtJSVXPo)

{% hint style="info" %}

#### You can set up custom [Shortcuts](/shortcuts) for each Command.

{% endhint %}

## Remember Runner's Position

Turning this setting on makes sure to keep the Runner window where you positioned it on screen.

## Insert Preview at the Bottom

Turning this setting on will show the preview area at the bottom of the Runner window. This is useful if you have long path names for your Symbols.

![](/files/-LdnNU5exMxpyIyYfGSc)

## Show Commands Transition

Turning this setting off will hide the Commands Bar when switching between them with the `tab` key.

## Save Recent Search Queries

Turning this setting on will save your session's search queries locally on your computer. This allows to use the `↑` arrow key to access previously typed queries. This only works when the input field is empty.

## Show Previously Run Actions

Turning this setting on will remember your executed actions. It will display them in chronological order in `Run` when the input field is empty.

![](/files/-LYCxGCZf2-W5mxqF5xT)

## Hide Emoji in Plugins Menu

Turning this setting on will remove the Runner emoji in the Plugins menu.

# FAQ

## Do you accept purchase orders or special contracts? <a href="#purchase-orders" id="purchase-orders"></a>

No, due to the large volume of inquiries we receive, we cannot process contracts, forms, or purchase orders. Please select one of the account options from our [pricing page](https://sketchrunner.com/pricing.html) to place an order.

## Runner is not showing up 🤔 What happened?

If you hit the keyboard shortcut, or launch Runner via the menu bar, and it doesn't seem to do anything, it could be that Runner managed to position itself somewhere off screen.&#x20;

Please go to Runner Settings via the menu bar: **Plugins > Runner Pro > Settings > General.**\
And then temporarily turn off **Remember Runner’s Position.** This should reset the position and bring back Runner to the center of the screen.&#x20;

If that doesn't fix it for you, please send us feedback through the plugin via **Plugins > Runner Pro > Send Feedback.**

## Can I upgrade from Personal to Team?

Yes, you can. We will charge you the difference in cost between a Personal and Team account. To start the process, please follow the steps to [transfer personal seats to a team](/pricing#transfer-personal-seats-to-a-team).&#x20;

## Is Runner paid only?

Nope, we still offer a free version of the plugin! When you first launch Runner Pro, you can start a free 14-day trial and test all its features. After the trial ends, the plugin reverts to Basic Mode, and you can continue using the [Run](/search-commands/run) and [Install](/search-commands/install) commands. Learn more about the differences between Basic and Pro Accounts on our [Pricing](/pricing) page.

## Runner looks broken, what should I do?

Please keep in mind Runner Pro is supported for **macOS Mojave 10.13+** and **Sketch 53+**. If you use it on older versions, it can look broken and work in unexpected ways.

If you are on supported versions of macOS and Sketch, and are still experiencing unexpected behavior, please let us know by shooting an email to <hello@sketchrunner.com> or get in touch via [Twitter DM](https://twitter.com/messages/compose?recipient_id=718901765991739392).&#x20;

## Do others also need Runner installed to work with my document?

No, everything you can do with Runner, you can also do with Sketch. Runner is not creating any dependencies. So, it's safe for you to use it, and for others to not have it installed, and work with your Document without issues.

## Do I need to use the same email address I used for my Sketch license as for the Runner Pro account?

No, a Runner Pro account is separate from Sketch. You can use any email address you want. Just keep in mind you have access to this email wherever you want to activate your Runner plugin.

## Why is there an emoji in the menu title!? <a href="#emoji" id="emoji"></a>

Because it shows Runner high in the plugins menu! If you don't like this behavior, [you can turn it off in Settings.](/settings#hide-emoji-in-plugins-menu)

## Do you have a discount for students? <a href="#student-discounts" id="student-discounts"></a>

Yes we do! We offer a 25% discount to students and teachers. [Learn more on how to apply.](/pricing#student-discounts)

# Developers

Your plugin can show custom icons and descriptions for each action in search results and RunBar.

## Integrate Your Plugin with Runner

To add a custom Description and Icon to your Plugin, you need to update your `manifest.json` file. In the example below you'll see how it works. You can add an `icon` and `description`. Optionally you can add an alternative icon for macOS dark mode with `iconDark`. Runner will pick those up and do the rest.&#x20;

The icons should have a 64×64 resolution to show up crisp in the search results.&#x20;

```javascript
{
    "name": "About Emoji Autocomplete",
    "identifier": "about",
    "script": "index.js",
    "handler": "onSelectAboutMenuItem",
    "icon": "iconRunner.png",
    "iconDark": "iconRunnerDark.png",
    "description": "Learn more about the Emoji Autocomplete plugin."
}
```

{% hint style="info" %}
**Custom UI**\
If your plugin relies on custom UI elements, please, add your key functionalities as commands to the menu bar like described above. Only this way users can find and see all the great functionalities you have to offer inside of Runner!
{% endhint %}
